Only 6 % of Norwegian students between the age of 16 and 19 have used cannabis in the past month, according to a recent survey.
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) has recently conducted a survey among 3500 students at 34 different upper secondary schools in Norway for the purpose of examining the students’ experiences with cannabis. This is the first survey aimed not only at understanding the use of cannabis among adolescents but also their knowledge of and attitude towards the drug, as well as their reasons for using it.
The survey reveals that many of the students lack knowledge about cannabis, and many of them also overestimated how many of their peers have actually used the drug. Additionally, the study reveals many misconceptions about cannabis use.
20 % of the students said they had used cannabis previously, and 15 % had been using cannabis in the past 12 months. Only 6,2 % of the students had been using the drug in the past 30 days. When asked, just 1 in 3 was aware that cannabis is now considerably stronger than it used to be, and 40 % overestimated the number of users among young people.
According to the survey, 55 % of the students asked seemed to have accurate knowledge of the consequences of being caught using or possessing smaller amounts of cannabis. Those who already had some experience with the drug stated the following reasons for not wanting to keep using cannabis anymore:
